FAQ #08

A great starting place is Tom Sloper's Mah Jong FAQs - the oracle of all-things-Mah-Jong! FAQ #08 covers general strategies, as well as specific pointers on the Chinese, Hong Kong, Japanese, and American flavours of Mah Jong.

Alan Kwan - Analysis

Alan Kwan has a number of interesting articles on his website looking at a mathematical analysis of Mah Jong. I quote from his site:

Mahjong, being a "parlour game", can be studied mathematically under the sciences of game theory, probability theory, and combinatorics. Here are some articles which take a combinatoric look at various elements in the game. Some mathematical background in basic combinatorics is expected of the reader.

Books on Strategy

In my opinion, of the books I have so-far read on Mah Jong, there are two which I have found most helpful in considering one's strategy in the playing of Mah Jong.

A. D. Millington

book-mj-millington.jpg - 7kb Millington contributes a whole chapter (Ch.4) of his book "The Complete Mah-Jongg" to the matter of strategy. Entitled "Luck and Skill in Mah-Jongg" it examines the place of luck in the Chinese game, before turning to an analysis of how the player may think primarily offensively about his play, and perhaps later defensively.

While Millington is useful and interesting I do find the layout of the book off-putting. Typeset like a novel it makes it difficult to find things in a hurry.

Eleanor Noss Whitney

book-mj_handbook.gif - 9kb Whitney devotes Part Three of her book "A Mah Jong Handbook" to the matter of strategy. In the following 47 pages she splits the topic up into three sections: (1) Luck and Skill, (2) Offensive Strategy and (3) Defensive Strategy.

Whitney was the first author I read on Mah Jong strategy.
