Getting help from newsgroups

One of the most wonderful things about the internet is that there is an almost endless number of people 'out there' who are ready to help you with almost any problem.

It be that your question has already been asked and answered. Google offer a way to search back through about 20 years of newsgroup activity to find the answer to your question.

Newsgroups

These are the newsgroups dedicated to various aspects of Psion activity:

  • comp.sys.psion
  • comp.sys.psion.announce
  • comp.sys.psion.apps
  • comp.sys.psion.comm
  • comp.sys.psion.marketplace
  • comp.sys.psion.misc
  • comp.sys.psion.programmer
  • comp.sys.psion.reviews

newsgroupNewsgroup Readers

One of the post popular ways to access newsgroups is to use a specialized software application.

Software

You may be surprised to learn that if you using Windows, then you very probably already have a newsgroup reader installed on your PC. Microsoft Outlook Express is installed alongside Internet Explorer and contains both an e-mail client and also a newsgroup reader client. If you have the full Microsoft Outlook installed, Outlook uses Outlook Express as its newsgroup reader.

Here are a few applications you might like to check out:

MS Outlook Express MS Outlook Express
The one most of us use, because a) we're too lazy to install anything else, b) it works fine, so why fix it, and c) it integrates nicely into Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer.
Forté Free Agent Forté Free Agent
A very good, powerful newsgroup reader. A more advanced version Forté Agent is also available for a nominal fee.
XanaNews

This is a fairly new application. It is free and has a very clean look.

Setting up an account

Your Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will give you instruction on how to set up your newsgroup reader software, and the address of their newsgroup server. This is usually something like

news.yourisp.tld

where yourisp is the name of your ISP, and tld is your top-level domain, e.g. .com or .co.uk.
